How to read a chart in five steps

Start with the day column and work outward.

• Find your day pillar, the third column. The 60 day pillars describe each one.
• Its top character is your Day Master, the “you” of the chart (Day Masters).
• Look at the month branch: the season you were born in, which the tradition weighs heavily (the four pillars).
• Count the elements: which of wood, fire, earth, metal and water show up, and which don’t (the five elements).
• Read the ten gods: how each other character relates to your Day Master (the ten gods).

What you need

Only your birth date. A birth time and the time zone of your birthplace are optional. Without them there is no hour pillar, and the day pillar uses your local date.

If you were born within about a day of a seasonal turn (Ipchun, around February 4, or another solar term), your year or month pillar can depend on the hour. The chart leaves that pillar blank rather than guess, and asks for your birth time.
